For Immediate Release:
4/24/12 – Mooresville, NC — Veteran NASCAR team owner Curtis Key will be fielding four cars in the NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Richmond International Raceway on Friday night. His newly formed company, TMG – The Motorsports Group, formerly known as Key Motorsports is a company focuses on developing top racing talent and bringing new marketing partnerships into the sport by offering affordable advertising and promotion programs as a multi-car NASCAR team.
Key, a native of Chesapeake Virginia, also bases his highly successful plumbing and heating business there – Curtis Key Plumbing Contractors, Inc. Key’s plumbing, heating and air conditioning business has served the Hampton Roads area, and greater Virginia and North Carolina with large residential construction projects as well as commercial work for over 25 years. In the motorsports business, Key is approaching his 20th year as a NASCAR team owner, and has had drivers behind the wheel of his race cars such as Tommy Ellis, former champions Chuck Bown, Larry Pearson and Jeff Green – and Sprint Cup Series veteran Jeff Burton to name a few.
With his passion for business and motorsports combined, Key built TMG around the premise of the way he would run a successful business, instead of looking at it as a hobby or tax write off – as many do. He has studied the racing industry over the years. Times are changing around the sport where it is getting more and more sponsor and investor driven; and also the latest trend of mechanical, parts or fabrication services coming out of a race operation – Key knew it was time to get serious about making a race team run itself financially and show a measurable return on investment.
While the TMG operation is headquartered in Mooresville North Carolina, Key remains strongly tied to his Virginia roots. Coming back to Richmond with his newly formed TMG team gives him a sense of great pride in what he has built.
“We are here for the long haul,” says Key. “I do not get into any business unless I plan to succeed. I research things very carefully and use what I have learned to change and adapt with the times in business and in the sport. This is what TMG is all about, adapting with the times and offering a solid business plan with the assets to go with it to potential marketing partners.”
While many team owners and teams in the NASCAR Nationwide Series have come and gone over the last 20 years, Key remains steadfast and has a renewed vision for his team.
“TMG is also looking ultimately towards the Sprint Cup Series as well,” states Key. “We can successfully race four cars in Nationwide and the next step is preparing to expand into Cup.” He continues. “With the multi –car program we can offer sponsors a lot more for their dollar. We also do everything in-house, and own our own engines. TMG also offers a body hanging service at our shop and that has been very successful now for the past 5 years and we have expanded this to service to all of NASCAR and ARCA series cars and truck current specifications.”
Key will be on hand at Richmond, overseeing the TMG fleet of blue and white Chevy Impalas this coming Friday for the Virginia 529 College Savings 250 at Richmond International Raceway with drivers Erik Darnell in the #40, Josh Wise in the #42, Chase Miller in the #46 and Scott Speed in the #47.
